Distance Education Vs Regular Eeducation in India
In regular or conventional education the University is located in the same place as the student. In this mode the student does not have the option to work and study but attends every day classes in a college affiliated to the university. The University must be recognized by UGC. The same university can provide education on a distance mode with the DEC (Distance Education Council) approval.

Distance Education simply means imparting education from distance. Here the University is located in a place away from the student's location. SMU offers many Programs for Distance Education in Bangalore as part of its effort to provide education to the students who for various reasons cannot join the formal education stream. In this case we, Sampoorna Academy of Management & Science, are an authorized learning center of the University, provide the classes and support to the students just like any other regular college.

Basically there is no much difference between distance education and regular education when you are studying with Sampoorna Academy of Management & Science, a dedicated learning center of Sikkim Manipal University . In both the cases the university must be recognized by UGC. In fact distance education has more advantages than regular education. In distance mode, students have the opportunity to work and study. They attend classes on week ends or in the evening.

One may think that in distance education the knowledge acquired is less that the regular mode but gaining of knowledge depends upon the student and not the University or the college. In distance mode, the university provides the student with study materials which are less in volume as the students are working and will not find much time to study. But the university never says that the student should not study beyond the study materials. There are reference books, week end classes, online classes from SMU through edunxt which all put together will be enough for any candidate to gain as much knowledge as he wants. The biggest advantage in distance education is that the student can implement the knowledge gained in the classroom in real life.

So one should not bear the impression that students who have studied thruough distance education are less meritorious than the regular students.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ

Whether attending Classes is compulsory under Distance Education Mode?

Attendance to Classes is not compulsory under Distance Education Mode, however each course provides counseling and hands-on training at the Learning Center. Students, in their own interest, are advised to attend these classes.

Is there any provision to pursue more than one course at a time?

There is no provision for doing more than one course of SMU at the same time. A candidate is permitted to pursue only one course of SMU at a time.

What is Lateral Entry?

Lateral entry is an opportunity given to a candidate having basic qualification and some other additional qualification/experience in the relevant field to enroll for a higher semester. However, such students will be required to appear and qualify in the previous semester/relevant papers. The candidate is required to pay a lateral entry fee (as prescribed in the university prospectus) in addition to the course semester fee in which he/she is seeking admission.

What is Credit System?

The ‘Credit System’ is followed for all courses offered through distance education mode. Credit system is a systematic way of describing an educational program by allotting specific time to a particular subject. This helps the student to understand the effort he has to put in, to successfully complete a course. Each credit amounts to 30 hours of Learning activities i.e., reading and comprehending the printed study material, attending counseling sessions, Online Classes, preparing assignments, etc.

What is Re-registration?

A student has to register himself/herself for each semester to become eligible to appear for the University Examinations. The terms ‘Fresh Registration’ and ‘Re-registration’ are explained below: -
(i) Fresh Admission or Registration - New candidates seeking admission are required to fill up Fresh Admission or Registration form.
(ii) Re-registration - existing students who get promoted to higher semesters have to re-register at the beginning of a Session and it is termed as Re-registration. Re-registration to the higher semester is mandatory to become eligible to appear for the university examination for existing students.

Can a student register for two Semesters simultaneously?

Re-registration to two Semesters simultaneously is not permitted.

What is Re-sitting?

If a student fails to clear any of the paper(s) or all subjects of a semester, he/she has to re-appear for the relevant paper(s) or semester by applying and filling up the re-sitting form along with relevant examination fee.

What is Re-admission?

-When a student is not in a position to complete the course within the maximum period stipulated, although re-registration was done earlier for all semesters: A student is permitted to get readmission for a maximum of 20 credits per session.

- Where the student had discontinued without registering for one or more semesters with or without arrears in earlier semesters: The student is required to apply for re-admission semester-wise during each session starting from the earliest non-re-registered semester. Along with the above, a student can apply for readmission for course(s) worth 4 credits in which he/she has arrears from the previously re-registered semesters.
The Re-admission form can be downloaded from the university website. The form should be complete in all respects and submitted along with necessary support documents and requisite fee. Incomplete application forms will not be considered for processing.

Can there be refund of fees after Admission or if a student withdraws from the course?

Fee once paid is not refundable under any circumstances (once admission is granted).
